AbouT

Howdy !,  You have come all the way, traveling so many miles ( through the world wide web ) to find out about who this guy is, exactly ? My name is Sreeharsha Naik ( aka - Sree ) and I am 25 yr old IBM DB2 Database Administrator on system Z from Mangalore, India. May be I am the first DB2 DBA from my city ? Well I have don't have the stats to prove that, if you find a DB2 DBA on system z from Mangalore redirect him/her to my blog. Anyways, Here it is -

" I am Electronics & Communication Engineer by choice & a DB2 DBA on system Z by sheer luck "

By Luck ?, Yes ! When I joined MphasiS, I was trained in Mainframe Technologies - All that JCL, COBOL, CICS - It used to be so booooring. Ask him or her how boring it was for me. I never had the interest to learn these things, may be I didn't like the trainer or my mind was not '' focused " ( you need this in today's world ! ). Just fresh out of college - and the first thing you do is '' hunt for jobs " , that's exactly what I did. If you are reading this and you are an engineer from Mangalore - this is exactly what you would have done. No, don't deny !!

After completing 3 months of training at MphasiS Learning Academy,  me and my friends from the training batch were deployed to Chennai ( they call Chennai & Pune as the Mainframe hub ). For Obvious reasons I wanted to work at Pune, I had never heard about Chennai in my 25 years of tick-tick. Chennai, Day 1 - We came to know that we were DB2 DBA's, it was the craziest moment for all except me. DB2 DBA, ? The reality told by seniors - You work as an application developer for 5 + years and then you can ' try ' to become a DB2 DBA ( a class & breed apart ) and here we were - Just out the shell and we had to see the world as a database. For me, it was just another day at work - booooring.

The turning point - I was assigned to a project that was stable and had a decent amount of requests coming in on a weekly basis. As a DB2 DBA, one had to be very careful with what he/she does with the systems. I was ignorant, I screwed the systems within a month that lead to a SEV 2 escalation call. The management here was kind enough as I was a '' fresher '' and saved me, but told me to fix the mess that I created. I had to learn '' performance tuning " within 3 days of time. Performance Tuning is something DBA's tend to learn once they are experts or top notch's in databases. 3 sleepless nights, and I eventually discovered a lot more than performance tuning and fixed the SEV 2, not just fixed it but improved the efficiency of the system to 28 %.

Ever since the incident, my love towards DB2 has grown and is constantly growing. Be it performance tuning, Bufferpools, Objects specs - you name it, I have directly or indirectly been a part of working on it. I don't intend to pass the message that you have to " destroy " to learn from what you have destroyed, but that's how it was for me and I am glad that long time ago, I destroyed something which gave me a breakthrough. If I have to pass a message then it would be - If one does not practice, there is no learning at any stage ( look who is saying - grinning ! )

This so called ' AbouT ' page is dedicated to all those who are ' AbouT ' to get started with their IT career. You can find me on Facebook & Linkedin and I will be happy to get connected to you and learn from you.
